A Trusted Security Provider and a Common Goal

“We’ve worked closely with Securitas since 2017 and we share the same values with regards to customer service and the student experience”
Nick Povey, Chief Security Officer, University of Southampton

Out-of-hours Requirement

With lecturers who are leaders in their fields and facilities that include a research aquarium and wind tunnel complex, the University of Southampton is in the top 1% of universities worldwide. Students and staff alike are attracted by its excellent reputation for innovation and an open campus policy that creates a welcoming environment. A well-established in-house security department maintains high safety standards across its six campuses, but its principle remit is daytime security.

The Story in Brief:

  • The University of Southampton was seeking a trusted partner to work in tandem with its in-house security department
  • Securitas’ track record in university security and commitment to creating a positive student experience were key factors in the University’s decision to award us an initial three-year contract and now extended to a fifth-year
  • Our team of 60 SIA licensed, uniformed officers patrol all campuses and halls of residences (on foot and in marked vehicles) throughout evenings and weekends providing a highly visible presence.

A Trusted Security Provider

The University was looking to appoint a trusted security provider for support in the evenings and at weekends, particularly around its 10 halls of residence. Some of the halls are situated near Southampton city centre, whilst others are within walking distance of campuses. Between them, they accommodate thousands of students – many of whom are away from home for the first time.

In line with internal procurement procedures, the University went out to tender to find a suitable partner. “The University prides itself on running a professional and committed security department”, says Nick Povey, Chief Security Officer, “Providing a positive student experience is one of our key objectives and it was essential that any contracted partner should share this attitude.” Drawing upon our extensive experience in university security we were able to demonstrate our understanding of their needs, and were delighted to be awarded the contract.

Our Solution

During evenings and weekends, a team of 60 dedicated, SIA licensed Securitas officers are a highly visible presence, patrolling on foot and in our marked mobile security vehicles.

These physical patrols support the extensive network of on-site CCTV cameras that are monitored by the inhouse security department. As well as providing reassurance for students, the presence of our uniformed officers also acts as a deterrent to anyone without legitimate reason to be on the University’s property. “We have worked closely with Securitas since 2017”, says Nick Povey, adding “The University has set itself some challenging goals over the next few years and I am confident that Securitas is well equipped to join us in this journey.” Extensive sector experience The University of Southampton is one of several UK universities with which we have security service contracts.
